August 11, 2006
Volume 1, Number 4

Many of the county fairs and State Fair will be happening yet this month.  Don’t forget to attend and support your youth and community. Check with your Show Chow feeding customers to see if they can win prizes for Show Chow Rewards. Remind them that the circles on the side of the bags are redeemable for prizes as well. http://www.showchowrewards.com/topperform_stat.html

St Paul Retail Solutions Expo is Sept. 12 – 13!  Make sure you are signed up and attending to take advantage of the specials offered this year. If you have already signed up, you will be receiving a separate email on these for your planning purposes. Feel free to talk to me about how to take full advantage of all the opportunities for your business.

Sept. 12 UPPER MIDWEST CONFERENCE FOR FEED DEPARTMENT MANAGERS & FEED DEALER OWNERS - Meet with your peers throughout the Upper Midwest and share ideas to learn from each other. Stay on the cutting edge of nutrition research and technology from Land O'Lakes Purina Feed livestock teams. Find out what's happening in the ingredient market. A MUST attend conference if you want to maximize sales, growth and profits (see details and registration information in Calendar section below).

Several coupons for horse and pet expired 7/31/06.  Make sure you get them sent to CMS for redemption. They will not accept them if they are more than 30 days past expiration dates. Make a copy of your submission when submitting, and put each PE group together for proper credit. Be sure to insure your envelope if it contains a great deal of coupons! Think about scheduling fall and winter months, school will be starting yet this month, harvest, and the busy sports schedules will not leave many nights to get these in if we wait too long.

Have a great month!

Impact Starter

You will be hearing more Purina dealers and their customers reporting successful starting cattle results with Purina’s Impact Starter Technology. This summer’s hot, dry conditions in much of or market have forced cattle producers to make significant changes in their weaning programs, feed and grass management strategies and in their choice of Purina feed products to use. Because of the IM Technology built into Impact Starter, you will quickly see how this product will respond to a variety of feeding situations.

Here’s how it works. Impact Starter contains Purina’s patented intake modifiers to help control consumption on calves. This allows the formula to be energy dense to enhance calf performance and feed efficiency yet be safe enough to be full fed.

Your customers and prospects (and their cattle) will also like the look and feel of Impact Starter. It is a coarse textured ration that is palatable to calves even if they have had limited access to dry feed before weaning. It holds up in the bunk better than pelleted feeds and resists moisture as well.

Your cattle producer contacts rely on Purina dealers to bring them nutritional solutions, especially in times when they have new challenges or (in the case of this year) when Mother Nature throws us a curve. Impact Starter will be your product of choice for many of these new situations this fall.

If you haven’t handled Impact Starter in the past please consult with your Purina sales representative or visit the Cattle Nutrition link on the Purina Mills website.   (Click here)

Texas Horse Mortality Incident Traced to Pesticide

An investigation by the Texas A & M College of Veterinary Medicine reported the tragic loss of 28 horses in July in Brazos County, Texas was apparently caused by phosphine poisoning resulting from an on-farm pesticide application.  The findings reconfirm Texas A & M's initial report that the Strategy bulk feed delivered to the farm was not the source of the issue.  (Click here for more detailed information)

5ZH6 Mazuri Bear Diet - NEW DIET

Over the years, bear diets have been a hot topic.  This diet is a low gluten, no corn diet high in essential fatty acids for good coat quality.  Also contains high levels of fish and animal protein products yielding increased palatability and digestibility.  Biscuit size is larger than 5635 Omnivore.  (Click here to view spec sheet)

5M52 Exotic Canine:  Change in package size, code and name on this product.  If you currently use this diet, you will notice the changes, but there has NOT been a change in formula.  Old specs:  5M52 Mazuri Exotic Canine - 40 lbs.     New specs:  5MN2 Mazuri Wild Canine - 33 lbs. (15 kg.)

5M08 Mazuri Ferret:  There has been a change in formula.  We have taken out the corn and replaced it with brown rice.  For specs, please visit www.mazuri.com.

5V05 Wild Herbivore (CUBE size):  When 5ZF1 Wild Herbivore was introduced in October 2005, it wasn't long before we had requests for a larger particle size for feeding Elephants and other larger hoof stock.  The Wild Herbivore product is a product that contains no grain products, contains a buffer and flaxseed (for Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids).  The starch level is less than 4%.  These products meet all the recommendations put forth in the last Giraffe Workshop proceedings for feeding giraffe.  (The two products are identical except for the particle size.)
(Click here to view spec sheet

5TJY Fish Analog (Relatively New Product):  This product was also introduced in October 2005.  It is to be used as a substitute for up to 50% of the frozen fish fed in an animal's diet.  The product has been in the making for the last 10 years and has been fed to penguins, seals, sea lions, dolphins, etc.  It has also been used as a diet for raising stork and can be used in the diet of other fish-eating birds.  The product comes as a powder, is mixed with hot water, then sets.  Cut into whatever size you need.  Can be frozen after cutting.  Can also be medicated prior to setting.

Change to Preservatives in Primate Products:  Ethoxyquin removed; now using Mixed Tocopherols as the preservative.  Products affected are 5672/5M02 Mazuri Leafeater, 5MA1 Mazuri Growth & Repro, 5MA2 Mazuri Primate Maintenance, 5MA3 Mazuri High Fiber Stocks, 5MA4 Mazuri Browse Biscuits, 5M29 Mazuri Monkey Crunch, 5NAA Mazuri Primate Basix and 5ZG7 Mazuri Enrich Bits.  This change of preservatives occurred in January, 2006.
